From mold design to injection molding: technical insights and practical solutions

Turning a plastic part from an idea into a finished product is a process that combines engineering, material knowledge and precise manufacturing.

Designing an injection mold means choosing the right polymer, defining how the mold will work,and selecting the most suitable injection machines and assembly systems. Every project is different and every solution is the result of experience, technical skills and a deep understanding of plastics behaviour.

How a plastic injection mold is designed

Before the mold takes shape, we often start with research and development to identify the best functional and assembly solutions for the plastic part. This early phase helps make mold design faster and more accurate. During design, we define how the mold closes, where the material enters, how the cooling system works, which steel is most suitable and how the part will shrink or deform during molding. When these elements are planned correctly, the mold runs smoothly and avoids common defects such as flash, warpage or excessive shrinkage, ensuring a stable and repeatable production cycle.

How an injection mold is manufactured

Manufacturing a mold requires high‑precision machining, EDM processes and specific thermal and surface treatments. The choice of steel is essential, especially for molds intended for high‑volume production. The overall quality of the mold determines how long it will last and how consistently it will produce parts over time.

How plastic injection molding works

Injection molding transforms plastic pellets into a finished component through a controlled balance of machine parameters, polymer behavior and mold performance. To keep cycle times efficient, reduce startup waste and avoid quality issues, the process must be carefully monitored. Optimized injection settings, automated presses, in‑line quality checks and continuous stabilization of the cycle all contribute to producing parts that match the technical drawing and meet customer specifications.

Polymers used in plastic injection molding

There is no single “best” plastic or specific insights. EPS selects the most suitable material for each project, whether it is a biopolymer, a traditional polymer or an advanced engineering plastic. Materials can be reinforced with glass fibers or mineral fillers, and they can be modified to be anti‑static, UV‑resistant or flame‑retardant. The choice depends on temperature, mechanical strength, aesthetics and the environment where the part will be used.

Some polymers require humidity‑controlled conditioning. We treat hygroscopic materials such as polyamide -PA6, PA66  commonly known as Nylon- in dedicated humidity chambers to ensure dimensional and mechanical stability. Even though dryers are used before processing, controlled humidity is also important for other engineering plastics such as PC, ABS, PET, PBT and PMMA.
